Hobson’s Choice is a true comedy – both funny and sad, and rich in human nature.

Set in Salford in 1890 it tells the story of Horatio Hobson, a hard-headed Salford boot shop proprietor who is much incensed at the “general increase of uppishness” amongst his three daughters.

Matters are brought to a head when he tells Maggie (the eldest and the ringleader) that she is past the marrying age.

Maggie promptly retaliates by marrying his most talented but timid and downtrodden boot-hand, Will Mossop. Maggie helps Will to develop his potential and together they turn the tables on the domineering Hobson.
