This powerful play, written in the 1930s and set in New England, tells the story of two women who run a school for girls. A rumour started by a malicious pupil about the two women soon turns to scandal. 

As the young girl comes to understand the power she wields, she sticks by her story, which brings tragedy for the women. It is later discovered that the gossip was pure invention, but it is too late. Irreparable damage has been done. 

The play was made into a film in the 1950s starring Audrey Hepburn, Shirley Maclaine and James Garner. 
It was also revived in the West End recently with Keira Knightly, Elisabeth Moss and Bryony Hannah.
